One man has been arrested in connection with the fatal firing of Cara Welsh, a University of Wisconsin- Whitewater turner this weekend in an on- lot apartment, days before the launch of the fall semester.
UW- Whitewater Chancellor Cory King verified Welsh's death in a communication to the academy community Friday, describing her as a" name member of the Warhawk slimnastics platoon." The 21- time-old rising elderly from Plainfield, Illinois, won a public title on vault at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Crowns last time and is majoring in business operation, according to the academy's athletic department.
This is a time when we're all called to support one another, to act and to suffer."
Chute police said in a news release shortly before night Friday after entering reports of a man shot at an apartment near Main Street in Whitewater, about 50 long hauls west of Milwaukee. The officers responded. There, they set up a woman, latterly linked as Welsh, with multiple projectile injuries. A 23- time-old man" known" to Welsh was also in the apartment, police said.
"Through investigation, it was determined that there was an altercation between the two prior to the shooting," police said. The release did not specify the relationship between Welsh and the 23-year-old.
The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, was arrested and booked into the Walworth County Jail, police said. Police have recommended charges of endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct while armed to the Walworth County District Attorney's Office.
The university's athletic department called Welsh a "phenom on vault" who performed "excellently" in "high-pressure situations," noting that she held records for vault in the history of the school's gymnastics program. Got four of the top eight scores.
A powerful athlete, dedicated teammate, and light in everyone's darkest days, Cara truly lifted each of us up during her time as a Warhawk gymnast. There are no words to describe the void we all share. We feel in our hearts, but Cara's legacy will live on through Warhawk Gymnastics.
"Cara had a unique ability to bring joy to anyone she crossed paths with, always putting a smile on people's faces with her humor, unwavering support and sweet disposition," the campaign said.
UW-Whitewater Chancellor King said the university's flag will fly at half-staff Tuesday in Welsh's memory. The University has made counseling services available to students, faculty and staff, and will provide additional support and flexibility to students who need it.
